Are more gears better for transmissions?

You have to dig deep these days to find a car that offers fewer than five gears, and even then it’s usually on an almost outdated base model. As late as the mid-80s, some brands still offered up three-speed automatic options. All through the 90s and early 00s we saw the four-speed transmission as standard for automatics and a five-speed was a go-to for the manual, yet now models like the 2018 Acura RLX have a 10-speed automatic transmission with Sequential SportShift paddle shifters and Grade Logic Control. Though Acura didn’t reveal much at the 2018 Chicago Auto Show, it’s still a brand that manages to stick out even in the chaos of car shows. There were plenty of big reveals this year, but attendees still felt themselves drawn to the luxury side of the displays at McCormick Place, where the show is hosted. Part of this is likely because Acura brought the Acura NSX, a model few are lucky enough to get close to.
