You have to dig deep these days to find a car that offers fewer than five gears, and even then it’s usually on an almost outdated base model. As late as the mid-80s, some brands still offered up three-speed automatic options. All through the 90s and early 00s we saw the four-speed transmission as standard for automatics and a five-speed was a go-to for the manual, yet now models like the 2018 Acura RLX have a 10-speed automatic transmission with Sequential SportShift paddle shifters and Grade Logic Control.
